The after-dinner drink that became the all-night drink. Vodka, fresh espresso, coffee liqueur — shaken until the crema sits thick on top. The three coffee beans are traditional (health, wealth, happiness — or just garnish, depending on who you ask). Use hot espresso or don't bother.

Ingredients

1 45 ml Vodka
2 30 ml Fresh espresso (hot, just pulled)
3 15 ml Coffee liqueur (Kahlua or Mr Black)
4 10 ml Simple syrup
5 3 (garnish) Coffee beans

Method

01

Pull a fresh shot of espresso. It must be hot and fresh — cold espresso won't give you the crema.

02

Add vodka, hot espresso, coffee liqueur, and simple syrup to a shaker with ice.

03

Shake hard for 15 seconds. You want a violent shake — the crema depends on it.

04

Double strain into a chilled coupe glass.

05

Float 3 coffee beans on the foam. They should sit on top if you shook hard enough.
