The Fifteen Hundred Rupee Question

When the king of mangoes drops its crown for the middle class

Culture alphonsomangoprices

Every April, Mumbai holds its breath. Not for the monsoons. Not for the heat. For the first boxes of Alphonso mangoes arriving at Vashi market with their impossible prices attached.

This year, something different happened. The boxes that cost Rs 8,000 in March now sit at Rs 1,500.

THE KONKAN STRIKES BACK

Fifty thousand boxes arrive daily during the season from Maharashtra's Konkan belt. Every morning at Mumbai's APMC Vashi market, the trucks roll in with their golden cargo. Ratnagiri, Devgad, Vengurla. The districts that own this fruit.

The Konkan doesn't negotiate with Mumbai's expectations. It delivers what it delivers when it delivers. This season, it delivered consistently. The result: premium boxes now range from Rs 1,500 to Rs 5,000, a correction that puts the hapus back within reach of the city's middle class.

The king dropped its crown. Mumbai picked it up.

THE EARLY SEASON GAMBLE

March buyers paid the premium for scarcity. Eight thousand rupees for twelve mangoes. April buyers are paying for abundance. The same twelve mangoes, different mathematics.

This is how Alphonso seasons work. Early buyers pay for the privilege of being first. Late buyers pay for the privilege of being practical. The fruit doesn't change. The market does.

PEAK SUMMER DEMAND

Ahead of Mumbai's peak summer months, when the heat makes Alphonso less luxury and more necessity, the timing works. The correction happened exactly when it needed to happen. The Konkan knew what it was doing.

The price drop follows the most fundamental rule of the mango market: supply eventually wins. Always has. Always will.

Fifty thousand boxes daily from the state's prime growing belt. The numbers tell the story. The Konkan strikes back.
