Aktar Islam Opens Awadhi Restaurant in London
Birmingham's two-Michelin-star chef brings Lucknow's courtly cooking to SE1
British-Indian chef Aktar Islam has opened his first London restaurant, Oudh 1722, at 66 Union Street, London SE1 1TD. The restaurant focuses on Awadhi cuisine, the courtly cooking tradition of Lucknow.
Islam already runs Opheem in Birmingham, which holds two Michelin stars. Oudh 1722 marks his push into the London market, spotlighting a regional Indian cuisine that rarely gets flagship treatment in the capital. Lucknow was recognised by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2023, lending the timing some weight.

Awadhi cooking, known for its dum technique and refined spicing, has long deserved a serious London address. Islam may just have delivered one.
