India Rewrites AAY Ration Rules, Debate Erupts

The Union government has released the Draft National Food Security (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing a significant shift in foodgrain entitlements under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY). The draft moves from a fixed household allocation to 7 kg per person per month, capped at 35 kg per household.

Currently, every AAY household gets a flat 35 kg per month regardless of family size, meaning larger families could lose out under the new formula. Public comments on the bill were invited until July 13, 2026.

Union Minister Pralhad Joshi has assured that no state or beneficiary will see a reduction in foodgrain supply, but critics remain unconvinced. Households with five or more members technically hit the same 35 kg ceiling. The math holds. The trust does not.
