Maharashtra Mandates Cheese Analogue Menu Disclosure

Restaurants must declare fake paneer use from May 1

Culture food-safetyregulationtransparency

Maharashtra's Food and Drug Administration ordered all restaurants, hotels, caterers, and fast-food operators to clearly disclose cheese analogue use on menus. The directive requires disclosure on both printed menus and digital display boards, with strict enforcement beginning May 1 following an April 30 compliance deadline.

The move follows multiple consumer complaints about outlets serving cheese analogue products without proper disclosure. Unlike milk-derived paneer and cheese, analogues are manufactured using edible oils, starch, and emulsifiers.
