FSSAI Bans Newspaper Wraps at Mumbai Street Stalls

Vada pav vendors caught using print media as food packaging

Street Food FSSAIvada pavfood safety

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has reiterated its ban on using newspapers to pack, wrap, or serve food, targeting Mumbai's street food vendors after a popular vada pav stall was caught doing exactly that.

FSSAI's Western Region office and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation conducted a joint inspection and initiated action against the vendor. The health risks are real: printing ink chemicals and heavy metals from newsprint can leach directly into food.

This is not new law, bas nayi yaad-dihani hai. FSSAI has flagged newspaper wrapping before, but the practice remains widespread at Mumbai's chaat and snack stalls. Vendors are expected to switch to food-safe packaging immediately.
