Sahyadri's Wild Monsoon Vegetables Hit the Road

Every monsoon, tribal vendors along the Sahyadri range set up roadside stalls selling wild-foraged vegetables found nowhere else in the region. At spots like Malshej Ghat, the seasonal spread includes Kartoli (spiny gourd) and Ran-Vangi (forest brinjals), both hyperlocal to the Western Ghats and available only during the rains.

These are not farmed crops. They are foraged directly from the forest floor, making them a direct window into the Sahyadris' edible biodiversity. The tribal communities who gather and sell them carry generational knowledge of what the mountain yields and when.
