Kolhapur Jaggery Stops as FDA Cracks Down
Producers suspend output statewide after adulteration raids hit Maharashtra units
Jaggery production in Kolhapur district stopped from June 8 after farmers told traders at the Kolhapur APMC they were suspending operations in response to the Food and Drug Administration's intensifying crackdown on adulterated jaggery units across Maharashtra.
The FDA has been targeting units where sugar and artificial colours are allegedly being mixed into jaggery during production. Daund units have also been shut. Trading at market committees in Pune, Sangli, and Nira has reportedly been suspended for four to five days as producers assess the fallout.
Kolhapur's jaggery is a GI-tagged staple of Maharashtra's food economy. With production and trade both paused, supply disruptions to markets across the state are expected in the coming days.
