The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration issued a comprehensive food safety compliance order on June 24, 2026, covering every food service establishment in the state. The order requires restaurants to provide safe drinking water free of cost and mandates menu transparency, including calorie counts and allergen information.

The FDA moved fast. Six hotels, restaurants, and bakeries in Mumbai underwent compliance reviews, with license adjustments following inspections between June 26 and 28, 2026. Areas covered included Nariman Point, Borivali, Bhandup, Santacruz, and Bandra. The order also bans serving food wrapped in newspapers statewide, a common practice at street stalls and takeaway counters.
