Maharashtra FDA Cracks Down on Fake Cheese
Restaurants must now declare cheese substitutes on menus and bills, or face enforcement.
The Maharashtra Food and Drugs Administration has mandated that restaurants, hotels, caterers, and fast-food operators disclose the use of cheese analogues on printed menus and digital display boards, with strict enforcement beginning May 1, 2026.
The move follows multiple consumer complaints about outlets serving cheese analogue, made from edible oils, starch, and emulsifiers, without disclosure, while billing it as real paneer or cheese. Unlike dairy-based cheese and paneer, analogues contain no milk.
