The EU Council adopted new rules on June 29, 2026 strengthening farmers' negotiating power against processors and retailers, aiming to secure them a fairer share of value across the food supply chain. Separately, the legislation reserves the term 'meat' exclusively for animal-based products.

Days earlier, new EU labeling rules for honey, juices, jams, and milk became enforceable in Ireland from June 14, 2026. For honey, country of origin must now appear on the label, with percentages declared when the product is a blend from multiple countries.

Both rules signal a clear shift: Europe wants more transparency for consumers and better leverage for the farmers who feed them.
