FSSAI Bans Cheese Analogues as Paneer
Food watchdog mandates clear labelling after widespread mislabelling violations
FSSAI West Region issued a public notice on April 22 directing manufacturers and restaurants to stop selling cheese analogues as 'paneer,' calling it a grave violation of food laws.
The notice targets widespread industry practice of passing off synthetic cheese substitutes as traditional paneer. From May 1, restaurants must clearly state on menus when cheese analogues are used instead of real cheese or paneer.
Food service establishments must train procurement teams and chefs to avoid mislabelling and ensure proper disclosure on display boards. The crackdown aims to protect consumers from food fraud in India's booming restaurant sector.
